Caveat Emptor – No Thanks! November 29, 2010

So the holiday season is here which means shopping season is in full swing! And everyone is looking for a deal, which sometimes means buying used/second-hand products. There is no shame in this. All I will say is DON’T BE STUPID!

Let me share with you an experience I had while using Craigslist*. I purchased a piece of furniture that I believed to be in good condition. After the purchase and during the reconstruction, I found that I had been misled in that belief. I attempted to resolve the issue, and after 3 days finally received a response. That response was full of legal retaliation, threats and blame. The seller decided that it was not their problem if I found the furniture they sold me to be faulty. All-in-all, it lead to a week and a half of headaches and stress.

So this holiday season, make sure to double- and triple-check all second hand purchases to avoid such situations!

*My problem was not a reflection of Craigslist (which I have used many times), but that of the sellers I interacted with this month.

Non-Traditional PR October 27, 2010

So I have been at my new job for a little more than a week now, and I LOVE IT! But it is definitely interesting to work in purely non-traditional PR. I received an amazing digital and social media education, but still always worked in traditional PR with non-traditional components. Now my job is solely content creation for social media. It is crazy new and amazing all at the same time!It is, of course, a learning experience, but I love a challenge!!!

What is also amazing is that I am receiving social media training to supplement my current knowledge. I can’t wait to see what else I learn as I move forward!

I HAVE A JOB!!! October 18, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Devon Alter @ 9:59 pm

So the past couple of weeks have been INSANE. I GOT A JOB!!! A week and a half ago, I found out that I got a job with Edelman Digital in Dallas, Texas. Since then, I have been on the move. I have been packing and moving like a mad woman! I found my apartment my second day here, and my furniture will be arriving throughout the week! Luckily I get to stay with family until I move.

And today was my first day of work! The best part? I get to work with Latin American countries which means I get to practice my Spanish! Woo! Patience pays off! I am very excited about this job! And I didn’t settle. Even though I had interviews for what I thought was the “perfect job,” this one is the definite winner of that category! I can’t wait to get deep in to my work! And I am weirdly excited about the fact that my name is on my phone.

In my craziness, I have failed to post. One topic I really meant to cover was the Miracle at the Mine in Chile. It was so nice to finally see a positive outcome after a natural disaster. No one played the blame game, no one passed the buck to someone else. They pulled together, and got those men out. It didn’t matter where the help came from, as long as the men go out alive. President Piñera did an amazing job! And because of that, 33 Chilean men have survived and the world gets a positive boost in the news, for once.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Chicago took place on Saturday, September 25. As I went to brunch with my cousin, daughter of a breast cancer survivor, we saw the restaurant crowded with runners, survivors, friends and family. We felt guilty having not participated, but there is a way you can help year-round!

Non-Digital job hunt in a digital world September 21, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Devon Alter @ 1:53 pm

As everyone knows, I have been on a rampant job hunt. Ninety-nine percent of my job applications have been submitted online with a very low response rate. Yes, I have had a few interviews from these applications, but still no job. I am no in Chicago, and hitting the job hunt hard. For the past two days, I have been hitting the streets, stopping by every office I can think of that would hire me. Some of them had open positions (which I found online), while others had no postings. But here is the kicker, by stopping in with a hard copy of my resume and cover letter, I was able to put myself in front of my potential employers. I even got an impromptu interview out of the deal!!

It is true that some offices only accept resumes and job applications online, or do not accept walk-ins of any kind. But, it is always worth the effort. After just two days, I am feeling positively about some of my leads and look forward to seeing what comes from them! So if you are stuck in an unemployment slump, hit the streets! Stop by anywhere and everywhere you want to work! And if you are out of state, start couch-surfing and use a local address. See what comes of it! Good luck fellow job hunters!

Calling All Favors September 13, 2010

I need a job. I really need a job. I can’t find a job. Now I am calling all favors. If you know someone that is hiring, or know someone who knows someone who knows someone that might be hiring, send them HERE!

My resume has almost all the information anyone will need to hire me. The only other information they need is that I am looking for a PR/Marketing position,  open to a wide variety of cities for relocation and am ready to start NOW. The cities I have been focusing on for my job hunt are Austin, Dallas, Chicago and New York, but I am pretty open to any opportunity. I also speak Spanish. (In fact, I just finished reading the entire Harry Potter series in Spanish!)

So all I ask now is for you to pass this on. Let’s help Devon get hired!

And don’t worry, I have not stopped hunting on my own. But I just figured that this couldn’t hurt!

Thanks everyone!

The Best Dance Moves for Men, According to Science September 8, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Devon Alter @ 11:05 am

Who has been to a party, bar, club or anywhere, and seen some guy dancing like a fool. I have been to all of these places and seen many men dancing like fools. Well HAVE NO FEAR MEN! Below is a link that will give you all the help you need (sort of).

According to a study done by Northumbria University in the UK, “the big secret to good dancing is using your whole body (as demonstrated above), and not just your arms and legs. (Specifically, we are talking about good dancing by straight men, intended to impress straight women, for the purpose of doing it.)”  Yes, someone actually took the time to study this.

The big problem I have is that the avatar of the “good dancer” looks pretty ridiculous. Where as the “bad dancer” looks like almost every guy I know on the dance floor.

What Your Lip Print Says About You September 1, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Devon Alter @ 12:04 am

Ever wonder what your pucker says about you? Well, read your lips! Check this out and learn more about your pout and “Lipsology” by Jilly Eddy. It seems pretty fun to me!
What Your Lip Print Says About You

My lip print says:

Oval or Round Shape – when the outside perimeter shape of a person’s lip print is round or oval, it reveals that the person likes things to go smoothly, they do not like conflict or to argue and they like everybody to be happy

Full Lower Lip -  children and pets adore them; the person could be a writer, speaker or entertainer of some kind

Light Coloring – tired (Well I have worked like a dog all month and am now just a couple days away from my little sisters Bat Mitzvah. Yes. I am tired!)

This is just my rudimentary analysis, but I would LOVE to know what Jilly the expert has to say! What does your lip print say about you?
