Being the Broadway lover that I am, I of course got my inspiration for this post from the Broadway show, Avenue Q. The song title: “I Wish I Could Go Back to College.” Some of the lyrics are:
I wish I could go back to college.
Life was so simple back then.
What would I give to go back and live in a dorm with a meal plan again!
I wish I could go back to college.
In college you know who you are.
You sit in the quad, and think, “Oh my God!
I am totally gonna go far!”
How do I go back to college?
I don’t know who I am anymore!
I wanna go back to my room and find a message in dry-erase pen on the door!
Ohhh…
I wish I could just drop a class…
Or get into a play…
Or change my major…
Or… (It gets mildly inappropriate here. Click here to hear full song.)
While listening to this song, I had flashbacks to all the people in my life who I have heard say, “I wish I could go back to college” or “If only I could go back…” And even though everyone could say this about some time in their life, to me it always sounded like regret for the “woulda, coulda, shoulda’s.” These people have some dream or desire they never had the opportunity to go after. Or at least they felt like they did not have the opportunity. I always told myself growing up that I would never work at a job where I was not happy, but would live at home and be a mooch before I was miserable. This brings me to now…
As I start my adult life facing the current terrible economy, I have pretty much nothing to lose. A good portion of my generation and I will have no excuse to look back and say, “I wish I could go back and chase that dream.” I know everyone does not have this luxury as chasing dreams often cost money that the unemployed just don’t have. But for those of you who are unemployed and lucky enough to have some extra cash – or supportive parents – you have no excuse. Get up! Go after your craziest, strangest, back-burner dream! The same goes for the recently unemployed. Use this opportunity to “go back” and do what you have always wanted to do. “Rule number 76: No excuses. Play like a champion!”*
For me, I know that it would have something to do with the makeup industry. I would love to do special effects makeup for film, be a professional makeup artist for celebrities or even be a beauty editor at a magazine.
What about you? Please leave a comment, tell me what you think and tell me what that dream is for you.
